Rotationplasty

Rotationplasty is a procedure performed when the sarcoma to be removed is of a large size and traditional reconstruction methods are not best suited.

  • This procedure is particularly useful in children and young adults.
  • It involves removal of sarcoma along with adjacent affected joint, the lower end of the remaining host bone is rotated 180 degrees and attached to the remaining host bone in the upper end with plate and screws.
  • This results in a drastic short limb, the ankle starts to function as the knee joint and an external prosthesis can be fitted.
  • These individuals can perform the most demanding tasks and experience excellent functional quality of life.
  • This is once a lifetime procedure and usually does not require any major revision surgeries during the life of the individual.
  • The major drawback of this procedure is the cosmetic disfigurement and short limb, which is not seen when an external prosthesis is worn.
